This is a question a lot of people aren’t sure about, and that uncertainty sometimes leads them to wait longer than they should. If you’re in significant pain, if something has been knocked out or broken, or if you notice swelling that’s getting worse, that’s an emergency. Here are some of the situations we see and treat urgently:
- A severe or worsening toothache that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter pain relief
- A knocked-out tooth, which has the best chance of being saved if you get to us within an hour
- A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth, especially if there’s pain or sharp edges
- A lost crown or filling that’s left a tooth exposed and sensitive
- A dental abscess, which can cause significant swelling and needs prompt attention to prevent the infection from spreading
- Facial swelling or jaw pain that came on suddenly

Common Emergency Scenarios: What Should You Do?
Knowing how to respond in the first few minutes of a dental emergency can make a real difference in the outcome. Here’s a quick guide for the most common situations:
Knocked-out tooth: Handle it by the crown, not the root. If possible, gently place it back in the socket and bite down softly to hold it in place. If that’s not possible, store it in a small container of milk or saliva and get to us immediately. Time is critical here.
Cracked or broken tooth: Rinse your mouth gently with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to keep swelling down. Save any broken pieces if you can and bring them with you.
Dental abscess: Do not try to drain it yourself. Rinse with warm salt water to help with discomfort, and call us right away. Abscesses are infections that can spread quickly and should never be left to resolve on their own.
Lost crown or filling: Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. Dental cement from a pharmacy can serve as a temporary fix until you’re seen, but it’s not a substitute for professional care.
Severe toothache: Rinse with warm water, floss gently to rule out something stuck between the teeth, and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum tissue, as it can cause irritation. Call us as soon as possible.
Facial swelling: Apply a cold compress in 10-minute intervals and get to our office promptly. Swelling that involves the jaw or neck needs to be evaluated right away.
