What Happens During a Cleaning and Exam
These two things are related but distinct, and both matter.
The cleaning, performed by one of our dental hygienists, focuses on removing the buildup that your toothbrush can’t reach. Plaque that hardens into tartar can only be removed with professional tools, and if it’s left in place long enough, it becomes a direct contributor to gum disease and tooth decay. Your hygienist will also clean along and just below the gumline, which is where the most consequential buildup tends to occur.
The exam is a separate but equally important step. One of our dentists will review your X-rays, examine each tooth for signs of decay or damage, assess your gum tissue, check your bite, and look for anything that warrants further investigation. This includes screening for oral cancer, evaluating existing restorations, and noting any changes since your last visit.
Together, a cleaning and exam give us a full picture of where your oral health stands right now and what, if anything, needs attention.
Why Twice a Year Is the Standard
The six-month interval exists for a reason. That’s roughly how long it takes for plaque to accumulate and for early-stage problems to become visible on X-rays or during a visual exam. Catching decay in its early stages means a simple filling instead of a root canal. Catching gum inflammation before it progresses means a cleaning and some home care adjustments instead of periodontal treatment.
Some patients actually need to come in more often than twice a year. If you have a history of gum disease, are prone to heavy buildup, have diabetes or certain other systemic conditions, or are going through cancer treatment, we may recommend cleaning appointments every three or four months. We’ll let you know if that applies to you and explain why.
What We’re Looking for During Your Exam
Dental exams at Luminaire Dental Aesthetics are thorough by design. During each visit, we evaluate:
- Individual teeth for signs of decay, cracking, or wear
- Gum tissue for the depth of the pockets between the gums and teeth, which is a key indicator of periodontal health
- Existing restorations, like fillings, crowns, and bridges, should be checked to make sure they’re still intact and functional
- Your bite and jaw joints for any signs of grinding, clenching, or TMJ issues
- Soft tissue, including the tongue, cheeks, and throat, is part of an oral cancer screening
This isn’t a quick visual sweep. It’s a structured evaluation that gives us the information we need to advise you accurately about your oral health.
Dental Cleanings and Exams in Bowie for the Whole Family
We see patients of all ages, and the approach is adjusted accordingly. For children, cleanings and exams include monitoring the development of permanent teeth, checking for early signs of bite issues, and applying fluoride or sealants when appropriate. For adults and older patients, we pay particular attention to gum health, wear patterns, and the integrity of any existing dental work.
Establishing a consistent routine early makes a significant difference over time. Patients who maintain regular dental cleanings and exams tend to spend less on dental care overall because problems are caught and treated before they escalate.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your appointment at Luminaire Dental Aesthetics starts with updated X-rays if they’re due, followed by your cleaning. We’ll ask about any changes in your health, medications, or symptoms since your last visit. After the cleaning, one of our dentists will complete the exam and go over the findings with you directly.
If something needs attention, we’ll explain what it is, why it matters, and what your options are. If everything looks good, we’ll let you know and schedule your next visit before you leave.
Dr. Busola Olaseinde Adegabi, along with Dr. Abiodun Adesanya and Dr. Ariel Anderson, takes the time to answer questions and make sure you actually understand what’s going on in your mouth. We don’t rush through exams, and we don’t assume you already know the context behind our findings.
The Connection Between Oral Health and Overall Health
This is worth mentioning because many patients don’t realize how significant it is. Gum disease has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes complications, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Oral infections can affect the rest of the body in ways that go well beyond tooth pain. Keeping up with dental cleanings and exams in Bowie is part of taking care of your overall health, not just your teeth.
